You've Been Pooing Wrong All Along: German Scientist Reveals Our Toilet Technique Isn't Good For Our Bottoms

Pooing: we all do it. But have you ever considered that your toilet technique might be all wrong?

If you sit on the toilet seat and go about your business - which is pretty much what everyone does - then you've been doing it wrong, says german scientist and author Giulia Enders.

In fact, squatting is the key to a healthy bowel movement, she explains.

sitting on toilet

The microbiologist says that in western countries, many people will sit down to poo.

This, Enders explains, has a negative effect on the body as it affects the shape of the muscles at the end of your colon. These make it more difficult to squeeze out a poo and increase the likelihood of piles or other issues.

“1.2 billion people around the world who squat have almost no incidence of diverticulosis and fewer problems with piles," she tells the Guardian.

"We in the west, on the other hand, squeeze our gut tissue until it comes out of our bottoms.”

Enders adds that squatting is effective because it allows your bowels to "open the hatch" properly.

Speaking to BBC Radio 4 on Woman's Hour, she reveals: "When you sit or stand, there's a muscle that goes around the end of the colon and it pulls, so there's a curve.

"When we're in a squatting position, and have a little stool in front of the toilet, then the angle is even and straight, so there's less pressure needed."

In addition to how you do it, there's also the question of whether your poop is healthy or not.

Earlier this month, HuffPost UK reports that the texture, shape and colour of your dung can hint at health issues including dehydration, undetected illnesses and dietary deficiencies.

For example, if you're excreting hard, pebbly poos, you may be lacking in the fibre and fluid departments.

Meanwhile softer stools generally mean you're doing fine.

Story continues below...

In Enders' translated book, which is about gut health (and, of course, poo), she also explains how humans have two sphincters.

The outer sphincter is the one which we all open consciously when we go to the toilet.

Meanwhile the inner one is the one for analysing whether it's "safe" to poo or pass wind. For example, if you're at home then you're good to go. If not, the inner sphincter works its magic.

However if the inner sphincter is ignored enough times (for example, if you feel nervous about going to the toilet because someone might hear you) then it can cause constipation.

So, Enders explains, we should listen to our inner sphincter more.

'Gut, The Inside Story of Our Body's Most Underrated Organ' is available to buy in the UK and online from 24 May.

Kylie Jenner makeup tutorials are going to be an actual thing and we really can't wait.

The 17-year-old took to Twitter in February to make the announcement, but no further info was released.

Luckily, her fans seem to be as impatient as us and Kylie responded to one user confirming the makeup tutorial videos will be with us in about one month.

In an interview with beauty vloggers Pixiwoo, Kim Kardashian revealed she was envious of her sister's skills and that Kylie often does her own makeup for red carpet events.

With every product she mentions selling out, and thousands of fans already trying to re-create her look with their own beauty tutorials on YouTube, we predict this new business venture will be a success.

But what exactly will Kylie's official videos entail? We took a look through her Instagram to steal her beauty secrets:

Not All Creative Newborn Photoshoots Are Safe, Warns Photographer

You've probably seen those adorable newborn photoshoots where babies are wrapped up in blankets or positioned in certain ways.

They're very cute, but are they safe?

One Scottish-based photographer and owner of Tiny Feet has spoken out and urged parents to be more wary of photoshoots that may not be using the correct techniques and safety procedures to get the finished shot.

Victoria Mackenzie issued the warning after knowing of two new mums who were left horrified after a photoshoot.

The mums explained that one baby wasn't safely held on a posing stand, and another baby's head was allowed to drop into it's hands when creating a specific post.

"I would advise parents to thoroughly research their photographer before booking," Mackenzie tells HuffPost UK Parents.

baby shoot

Mackenzie is professionally-trained in newborn photography and said creative and artsy shoots should only be created using edited shots, which show how the final result is produced.

By doing this, the baby can be kept safe at all times.

She explained that there should always be an assistant or parent available who is able to support the baby as and when is required.

Photographers who aren't properly trained see these photos and think they can recreate them, without the proper safety procedures.

"Without proper training, it can be very easy to put the baby into a situation where they could be seriously harmed," Mackenzie told the Northern Times. "Parents often do not know the risks and aren’t aware of what is correct or dangerous conduct."

Mackenzie says demand for these sorts of shoots is growing, which is why she is urging parents to make sure the photographer is professionally trained, and goes through the safety checks.

"These types of photo shoot take a lot of time and skill to achieve. Photographers properly trained will have invested in proper equipment, insurance and training, which will be reflected in the cost," Mackenzie tells HuffPost UK Parents.

"Be wary of photographers offering the shoot and all images on disk for a low cost. While there may be professionals out there who use this as their business model, in my experience, you really do get what you pay for."

baby shoot 3

Mackenzie says a good way to find out if your photographer is practicing safe conduct is to go onto the Baby and Newborn Photography Association where you can search for photographers in your area who are properly insured and who use composite images to achieve the cute poses which are so popular.

"Baby safety should be the number one priority when choosing your photographer, everything else should come second," she added.

baby shoot 2

Helen McGlynn, co-owner of the Baby and Newborn Photography Association has spoken out to say recent reports have shown bad practise from photographers, as well as a lack of awareness from parents about how shoots should be done properly.

"The problem is parents see these photos and ask for them, not knowing how they’ve been created. At that point mums and dads, who are usually exhausted with very young baby, are totally relying on the photographer to know what they are doing and to have had the right training. Sadly that is often not the case," she told the Northern Times.

The Bad Romance singer, who has given herself a stylishly understated new makeover as of late, reportedly enlisted the acclaimed bridal designer to create a one-of-a-kind gown for her big day.

A source told Life & Style magazine: ''She trusts Vera to create an elegant, flowy dress that will fit into her dream wedding!''

Along with her haute couture lines, Vera Wang has previously designed custom-made dresses for a number of other celebrities, including Victoria Beckham, Kim Kardashian and Mariah Carey.

Home-Brewed Morphine Now Possible With Beer-Making Kit

Scientists have just taken home-brewed beers to a worrying new level: home-brewed morphine.

No, they haven't discovered how to numb your physical pain using alcohol. That's still only possible by getting ridiculously drunk.

They have however, discovered a way to genetically modify yeast so that instead of converting sugar into alcohol, it will change sugar into morphine.

The research published in Nature Chemical Biology, was led by a team of scientists from University of California of Berkley, who claim that their discovery will do away with growing fields of opium poppies.

opium poppy

John Dueber, a bioengineer who worked on the research said:
"What you really want to do from a fermentation perspective is to be able to feed the yeast glucose, which is a cheap sugar source, and have the yeast do all the chemical steps required downstream to make your target therapeutic drug.”

READ MORE:

So what exactly goes into a home-brewing morphine kit?

Dueber and his team isolated an enzyme from a sugar beet plant and inserted it into the yeast, which ultimately allowed the tiny microorganism to change sugar into reticuline - a compound which can then be converted to morphine.

Ok, so the home-brewing morphine process is not as easy as making your own beer. Unless of course you are particularly skilled at isolating enzymes or you happen to get your hands on Dueber's strain of yeast.

The process is still in its early stages and quite inefficient. Scientists reportedly require 300 litres of genetically engineered yeast to produce a single 30 milligram dose of morphine.

The research does have the potential to be a double-edged sword.

On the one hand, using yeast to produce morphine and other medication will dramatically reduce the cost of drug production.

Home-brewed pain killers and even potentially heroin, however, will also be much harder to regulate if the research gets into the wrong hands.

Dueber explained: “The time is now to think about policies to address this area of research. The field is moving surprisingly fast, and we need to be out in front so that we can mitigate the potential for abuse.”

For now however, let's take a moment to simply celebrate the science behind the pint. Cheers.

Wife Bonuses Are Now A Thing, According To Wednesday Martin

$

The internet is in uproar over an opinion piece published in the New York Times suggesting wealthy Manhattan families operated like hedge funds, with women receiving "wife bonuses" for doing "good work" like keeping a tidy house or getting a child into a good school.

Anthropologist Wednesday Martin penned the op-ed about what she calls "Glam SAHMs" or "glamorous stay-at-home mums", which was published on Sunday alongside a picture of a man holding a woman with a chain around her neck.

Martin writes: "A wife bonus, I was told, might be hammered out in a pre-nup or post-nup, and distributed on the basis of not only how well her husband’s fund had done but her own performance - how well she managed the home budget, whether the kids got into a “good” school - the same way their husbands were rewarded at investment banks.

"In turn these bonuses were a ticket to a modicum of financial independence and participation in a social sphere where you don’t just go to lunch, you buy a $10,000 table at the benefit luncheon a friend is hosting."

Although there's very little evidence around to support Martin's claims - one high-stakes divorce lawyer told WaPo: "The clients I have would be thoroughly offended by that phrase. They pour so much work into raising their families. They're in charge of managing the household, all the players involved. Often their husbands travel and don't want them to work."

Meanwhile, Business Insider asked some real hedge fund managers if they had ever heard of the phenomenon, but most deemed it doubtful.

"Typically an employer offers a bonus to incentive their employees. I guess to some marriage is no different. But honestly when I first read the article I had to double check to make sure it wasn't published by the Onion," one said.

A banker added: "I'm skeptical that they exist. I worked in banking for a long time. Do bankers buy their wives stuff - and also give them money - when they get their bonuses? Absolutely. Do the girls joke about it when they're drinking wine with their friends and call it a 'wife bonus'? I'm sure they do. But is the 'wife bonus' a real tangible thing? I seriously doubt it."

Luckily for Martin, the controversy surrounding her column comes just weeks ahead of her new book launch.

Attention nerds! Especially: board game nerds! And especially: British board game nerds!

(And we do of course include ourselves in that description.)

The game Settlers Of Catan just got even better - thanks to the website Catan Maps.

Catan Maps is run by people who "all love Settlers of Catan". As they say about the best-selling board game, "one of the best things about it is the limitless possibilities when it comes to creating variable maps" - and that's what the website is devoted to.

The latest variable map they've come up with is rather special, however. Inspired by the BBC election night's map of the British Isles - which spookily resembled a Catan board (including Emily Maitlis as a real-life robber) -

- they've made a Settlers Of Catan version of the British Isles. And yes, it's totally playable.

Kate Silverton has spoken out about the challenges she faced parenting two young children after her son was born last July.

The BBC newsreader admitted feelings of guilt when her time had to be split between nursing her newborn, Wilbur as well as spending time with her four-year-old daughter, Clemency.

"I wasn’t prepared to feel so protective of him – sometimes even at the expense of my daughter’s feelings. Neither was I prepared for the guilt I would feel at spending my time trying to be the same sort of mother to Wilbur as I was to Clemency," Silverton told the Daily Mail.

The 44-year-old explained that the psychological change she went through going from parenting one child, to having too was a lot more challenging than she expected.

She admitted it was hard to come to terms with the fact that her children's upbringing will never be the same, as Clemency had their attention completely, but Wilbur will always have an older sister.

Silverton described times when her daughter had changes in behaviour when Wilbur was born such as becoming more demanding and not going to nursery.

The child psychologist was quick to realise why her daughter was acting up. "I realise how it must have felt to her. Her entire world had been turned upside down; she felt she’d “lost” me and was having a tough time making sense of it all," she added.

Scientists Uncover The Real Reason Why Men Exist

$

Why do men exist? It's a question that has been puzzling women biologists since time began, but now scientists finally have an answer

For decades, biologists have puzzled over how evolutionary selection allows for the existence of males.

After all, a male's only contribution to reproduction is sperm. On the surface, it makes more sense to have an all-female population that is able to reproduce without men.

But new research suggests men might be useful after all, as sexual competition improves population health and ultimately protects against extinction.

group of men

“Almost all multicellular species on earth reproduce using sex, but its existence isn’t easy to explain because sex carries big burdens, the most obvious of which is that only half of your offspring – daughters – will actually produce offspring," said lead researcher Professor Matt Gage, from UEA’s School of Biological Sciences.

"Why should any species waste all that effort on sons? All-female asexual populations would be a far more effective route to reproduce greater numbers of offspring."

To test the importance of sexual selection and establish a reason for the existence of males, the researchers allowed a colony of Tribolium flour beetles to evolve over 10 years under controlled conditions.

In some groups, female beetles outnumbered males while in others, 90 male beetles had to compete to reproduce with just 10 females.

After seven years of reproduction under these conditions, the researchers found males who had competed for a female mate displayed higher levels of fitness and were more resistant to inbreeding and disease than those in other groups.

SEE ALSO:

Why Men And Women Want Sex At Different Times Of The Day

This Is Why Modest Men Will Always Do Better In The Relationship Stakes

Populations that had experienced weak or non-existent competition showed more rapid declines in health than others.

Beetles who had experienced no sexual selection became extinct after 10 generations.

“These results show that sexual selection is important for population health and persistence, because it helps to purge negative and maintain positive genetic variation in a population," Gage commented.

“To be good at out-competing rivals and attracting partners in the struggle to reproduce, an individual has to be good at most things, so sexual selection provides an important and effective filter to maintain and improve population genetic health."

The research was funded by the Natural Environment Research Council, the Leverhulme Trust and the University of East Anglia and is published in the journal Nature.

While competing for a mate may improve long-term population health, a previous study suggested men have a shorter life expectancy than women because competing for a female takes its toll on their health, by forcing them to exhibit "risky behaviours" in order to gain attention.

"This whole pattern is a result of sexual selection and the roles that males and females play in reproduction," Daniel J. Kruger, a research scientist in the University of Michigan previously said.

"Females generally invest more in offspring than males and are more limited in offspring quantity, thus males typically compete with each other to attract and retain female partners."

Baby excitement is on the horizon for Ayden Callaghan and his TV presenter fiancee, Sarah-Jane Honeywell as they announced on Twitter they are expecting their first child together.

33-year-old Callaghan, who plays Joe Roscoe in Hollyoaks, took to Twitter to tell his fans the good news.

And what better day to reveal the news than after attending The Baby Show on Sunday.

And the mum-to-be wrote:

It seems the couple are very much loved up, as they both retweeted and commented on each other's tweets, telling each other they loved each other. Here's Callaghan's, and it definitely made us slightly jealous. Naw, you guys.

Callaghan expressed his excitement on Twitter with a range of emojis after he has released the news to his followers. That is one seriously happy dad-to-be.

And it wasn't long before the congratulations messages came in their drones. Callaghan tweeted about receiving Teething Gumigen goodies, and Honeywell was asking her Twitter fans for maternity dress recommendations.

We do love a bit of new baby news.

Zumba 'Burns More Calories And Makes You Fitter Than Salsa' (But Both Will Make You Happy)

With Zumba classes now available in gyms and town halls across 180 countries, there's no denying the workout has become something of a worldwide phenomenon.

And its reign as the go-to dance-fitness class doesn't look set to end any time soon.

New research suggests Zumba may be even better for our health than the traditional Latin American dance styles it takes its inspiration from.

The study, conducted by Kingston University and the University of the West of Scotland, suggests Zumba is more effective than salsa in helping inactive women up their fitness.

zumba

For the study, 24 healthy women between the ages of 22 and 56, who usually exercised one per week, did two salsa classes and two Zumba classes over a two-week period.

In a typical salsa dance class, development of dance technique is the primary emphasis.

The study explains: "About half of each salsa class is spent in partner work, with men being taught how to lead the figures and women being instructed on appropriate following and styling skills.

"A warm-up song and three to four practice songs are typically played during a one hour session. Class structure and selection of music, including song tempo, which affects dance intensity, are determined by the instructor."

In contrast, the primary purpose of Zumba is aerobic exercise. Less attention is placed on correct execution of the formal dance steps.

"A typical one hour Zumba fitness class consists of one to two warm-up songs, followed by eight to 10 main songs choreographed to elicit both low and high intensities of dance," the study states.

"Sessions conclude with one to two songs used for cool-down and stretching."

For the study, the women wore chest monitors and fitness wristbands throughout both classes.

Upon analysis, these revealed that women burned more calories during Zumba sessions than they did during salsa sessions.

Their heart rate also increased more with Zumba than it did with salsa.

Particpants were also asked to answer a questionnaire after each class. The results showed that both styles of dance fitness class were associated with improvements in psychological wellbeing.

The research is published in the Journal of Sport and Health Science.

Previously speaking to HuffPost Healthy Living, Zumba instructor and education specialist Kass Martin said the feel-good factor of Zumba can help women maintain motivation to exercise.

"It completely changes the idea of exercise because it's something you really look forward to," she said.

"I had a student who lost 75 pounds - and she was having fun. A lot of these people wouldn't be going to the gym at all if it weren't for Zumba."

Could This Electronic Pill Help Combat Britain's Growing Obesity Problem?

$

It's no secret that Britain - and, in fact, the rest of the western world - is experiencing something of an obesity epidemic.

It is estimated that three quarters of men in the UK will be obese or overweight by 2030.

In response to this global health issue, an electronic pill has been designed which could effectively prevent overeating.

The pill is no bigger than a vitamin tablet and has been designed for people who want to slim down, but struggle when it comes to portion-control.

obesity pill

The swallowable pill, designed by MelCap Systems, works by emitting vibrations which make users feel full.

When the capsule arrives in the stomach, it absorbs fluids in the stomach and increases in size, allowing it to remain in place and work its magic for up to 21 days.

Using a wireless remote control (which can be an android phone or iPhone), the capsule is activated and delivers electronic stimulation to the nerves of the stomach wall.

The electronic stimulation enhances the feeling that enough food has been eaten and helps to control the urge to gorge on more food.

Therapy can then be repeated for up to 21 days using the same capsule. After this period, the tablet will simply pass through the body and patients can swallow another pill.

While it might sound too good to be true, there have been mixed responses to the electronic capsule.

Speaking to HuffPost UK Lifestyle, Dr Nitin Shori, medical director of the Pharmacy2U Online Doctor service and a working NHS GP, notes that it's an "interesting concept" but the results of clinical trials are yet to be seen.

Story continues below...

“At present, one of the popular medical treatments is orlistat pills, which can stop nearly a third of dietary fat from being absorbed," says Dr Shori.

"In some cases gastric surgery is used to cause the feeling of fullness after eating smaller portions."

But he adds that lifestyle changes are always an important first step and that eating a balanced diet and keeping active are crucial for keeping excess weight off.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, the National Obesity Forum's Tam Fry told the Daily Mail that she welcomes the pill and thinks that the technology is going in the right direction.

However, she added that "we don't know the cost" and that the NHS is "getting very tough on price, even when medication is known to be effective".

So it wouldn't necessarily be used on the NHS as a free treatment against obesity.

We know too well how the traditional Barbie doll that we grew up with is a poor representation of women today.

Last week, an inclusive 'Dolls With Disabilties' range was launched after the #ToyLikeMe Facebook campaign became viral.

And now, one mother has caught on and 'upcycled' her daughter's dolls to make them look more realistic to every day woman. She's called them Pixan Dolls.

I had so much fun painting this doll! I wanted to paint a beautiful girl with albinism. I made some research and I...

Lizette Flores, a mum of three who is based in Canada, took dolls from her daughter's toy box and adapted them to show her daughter that beauty comes in different shapes, different looks and different sizes.

"I really want kids to know that they can define what’s beautiful. It’s not a company that’s going to dictate (to) us how we should look," Flores told The Mirror.

How Long Does Wine Last Once Opened? Infographic Reveals All

$

Nothing puts a smile on our faces quite like wine o'clock on a Friday evening.

Although that smile quickly fades when Monday night arrives and we realise that the wine we didn't finish on Friday might have gone past its best.

When this happens, there are usually two options:

1) Tip it down the sink and sob uncontrollably.

2) Try a sip to test if it really is out of date. (But be prepared for vinegary consequences).

Now, thanks to Madeline Puckette at Wine Folly, you can be safe in the knowledge of whether your wine is out of date or not.

Ladies and gents, behold, the wine-lover's bible.

how long does wine last

The infographic reveals that sparkling wine lasts for 1-3 days if kept in the fridge with a wine stopper.

Puckette writes: "Sparkling wines lose their carbonation quickly after opening." She adds that a more "traditional" sparkling wine, such as Cava or Champagne, will last a little longer than, say, Prosecco.

Meanwhile, light white, sweet white and rosé wine can last between 5-7 days if refrigerated with a cork or screw top.

"Most light white and rosé wines will be drinkable for up to a week when stored in your refrigerator," says Puckette. "You’ll notice the taste will change subtly after the first day as the wine oxidises."

She notes, however, that some wines will taste even better after the first day including "minerally cool-climate wines" such as Northern Italian Pinot Grigio, French Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc.

Full-bodied white wine (if kept in the fridge) and red wine will last between 3-5 days.

And if you really want to savour the flavour and get your money's worth then opt for "fortified wines" such as Port, Sherry, Marsala, and Madeira, which can be kept for 28 days.

How far would you go to check up on what your kids are getting up to on the internet?

A recent study, commissioned by Irish Life, has revealed that one third of parents in Ireland have been setting up Facebook accounts to befriend their children and watch out for any inappropriate social media activity.

Parents who took part in the study said that snooping around on their children's social media was only because they were looking out for them, and making sure their children were safe.

The study, which involved 2,000 parents, initially aimed to unveil their fears about what their children are exposed to online.

The researchers also discovered that only 38% of parents have enabled parental controls on their children's phones and laptops and just 7% have enabled location tracking.

Five Signs To Check For Breast Cancer - How To Spot The Symptoms

While most women know that lumps are a key sign of breast cancer. However, despite this important indicator, lumps may not be evident during the initial phases of cancer.

Also, other forms of breast cancer, such as inflammation, will not create lumps and therefore must be identified separately.

Women must always be cautious and watchful of any changes in their breasts which may signal a malignancy.

Other potential signs of breast cancer include a change in the appearance of nipples, a chance in breast size, upper back pain, swelling in the armpits and sore, itchy nipples. Read our piece on five signs of breast cancer to find out more.

Here are some of the lesser known symptoms of breast cancer to check for, according to the BrightStar organisation and the New Health Guide site. If you notice any of these, it is advisable that you contact a doctor as early as possible.

1. Sore, red and itchy nipples

The most visible indications of imflammatory breast cancer are scaliness and reddening of the skin on the breast. The skin may become itchy and sore to touch, which can be accompanied by swelling and an outbreak of purple spots resembling bruises. This is due to the type of breast cancer, which blocks the blood vessels, resulting in colour change. Some may also find dimples on their breast.

However, it is important to note some of these symptoms may be caused by other factors. A change in washing detergent, pregnancy, hormone imbalance, or another rash.

If it doesn't appear to be particularly extreme, it may be worth leaving it for a few weeks before consulting your doctor.

If the symptoms persist for longer than a menstrual cycle, get drastically worse, or are confined to one breast - make an appointment.

2. Upper back pain

You can sometimes spot breast cancer with a pain felt in the back or shoulders, rather than the chest or breast.
This pain can easily be confused with sore muscles after exercise. However, the pain will not decrease with stretching or changing position. Furthermore, it can extend to a bone pain - deep ache or throbbing.

This is caused by the primary spread of breast cancer to the spine or ribs, often becoming secondary spine cancer.

Upper back pain is also one of the first signs to be felt by women who have developed a tumour, due to it lying in the glandular tissue near the chest wall which, as it grows, puts pressure on the spine.

In most cases, women fail to recognize this pain as a sign of breast cancer, and can often dismiss it as muscular strain.

If your back pain doesn’t go away with rest or stretching - consult your doctor.

3. A change in nipple appearance or size

The growth of a tumor in close proximity to the nipple can be quickly spotted, as changes in shape and appearance develop fast. You may quite easily become aware of it as you get dressed or look in the mirror.

The most common changes associated with breast cancer are a flattening or inversion of the nipple. If your nipple has visibly shrunk, or isn't as prominent as it usually is, this could be a sign.

One of the most common locations for a tumor is under the nipple, which can alter the look and feel of the nipple. There can also be decreased sensitivity, which may be highlighted when engaging in sexual activity.

Equally important is discharge from the nipple without it being pressed. If this liquid includes blood then it is a clearer indication of cancer.

4. Change in breast size

An uneven change in the size or shape of your breasts is often a sign. This is essentially important if you have been informed you have a dense tissue breast as lumps will often be hidden and cannot be felt, sometimes even mammograms can miss them.

A visible loosening or swelling can also be an indicator. However, this is no cause to be severely alarmed. It is best to get a mammogram or check-up at the doctors, and be relieved, than to not detect the presence of a tumour.

5. Pain, lumps or swelling in the armpits

A common place to be affected first by cancer is the lymph nodes present in the armpit. Any pain in the armpit must be checked carefully with fingers. Typically, a lump under the armpit will won't move and will be hard to the touch - it may also be particularly sore or tender.

Apart from lumps, swelling can be a symptom when under the arm or the collarbone.

However, colds, flu and infections can also cause swollen lymph nodes, so if you’re ill you may want to wait until you feel better, to see if it is related.

Parents Spend Hundreds Of Pounds Preparing For A Baby Boy... Then Mother Gives Birth To A Girl

Finding out whether you're having a girl or a boy is one of the most exciting parts of your pregnancy.

But it's not always 100% accurate.

Steve and Shelley Forde spent hundreds of pounds painting everything blue and stocking up on boy's clothes after they found out the gender of their baby during an ultrasound scan, only for Mrs Forde to then give birth to a girl.

They paid £79 for an early scan at 16 weeks which promised a 99% accuracy rate, but it still turned out to be wrong.

Mrs Forde gave birth on the floor of her dining room two weeks premature and they both believed their baby was a boy until the midwives arrived.

“Shelley did amazingly and after a bit of wiping down what I thought was Harry was straight into my arms, wrapped up," Mr Forde told the Evening Standard.

But it was only when the midwives arrived that the couple realised that newborn Harry was actually a girl, weighing 6lbs 5oz.

The couple decorated their newborn's nursery for the arrival of a boy and bought a whole new wardrobe of boys' clothes, one of which included a Harlequins rugby club baby grow.

They even took three months to finally settle on a boys name that they both liked - Harry.

Mr Forde said he wanted to get his son into rugby, but is still over the moon with his new baby girl.

The couple have since put up photos on Facebook of baby Lola in pink jeggings, and another of her in a purple spotty dress. It seems they must have had a quick dash to the shops for those items.

"I guess we're just that 1% where they get the gender scan wrong," Mr Forde said when referencing their 99% accuracy baby scan.

Who knows, Lola might grow up to be a rugby player...
